Star-studded dream; Don’t you just love it when the bad taste starts removing itself from the walls? This room wasn’t only badly designed, it was badly executed. Or perhaps the decorator should have been. Time to wave goodbye to the wavy-edged bedspread and embrace a brighter future

STAR A-PEEL We removed the self-peeling paper and replaced it with one featuring a single star repeat on a neutral background. This spacious design has a small pattern used over a vast space, so it doesn’t make the room feel smaller. The wallpaper is Baltzar (NW) Dark blue 508-56 from Swedish home superstars Sandberg, www. sandbergab.se/en.

LAYER UP ON COMFORT Adding layers adds visuals and ups comfort levels. There’s nothing like leaping on to a bed and throwing off all the pillows before you hit the hay. As long, that is, as you carefully rearrange them all in the morning. And don’t be afraid to mix patterns as long as you keep to the same colour palette, feel free to go lighter or darker for this tone- on-tone look.

FOLLOW THE PATTERN The key to using patterned wallpaper is exercising restraint and remembering to leave breathing space between each layer. This lessis- more approach is ideal if you’re unsure how to mix patterns and will stop rooms looking like camouflage. Here, wallpaper is balanced by self-coloured curtains, while the cushions and throw sit cleanly on a white duvet.

DOUBLE VISION Use pairs of lamps to flank a bed, or on either side of a sideboard or chest of drawers. Use to highlight artwork or mirrors on walls or anywhere you want to create balanced, symmetrical style. For great value lamps try TK Maxx (www.tkmaxx.com) and you heard it here first Britain’s largest TK opens on Argyle St this October. Floor upon floor of designer bargains.

SOMETHING TO REFLECT ON Mirrored cabinets have become a designer staple because they’re just so fabulous. Adding style, they evoke thoughts of Hollywood glamour as well as functionality. Pound for pound, they knock all others into second place. For a similar look, try the mirrored 2&2 chest, pounds 315 from Freemans, www.freemans.com.
