A NEW eco-hotel near Newquay swept the board after being crowned “winner of winners” at the Cornwall Business Awards. The Scarlett Hotel at Mawgan Porth, claimed the prize as the county’s business of the year at the glitzy awards bash at the St Mellion International Resort on Thursday.

In front of a record audience of over 300 business and public leaders the luxury hotel overcame competition from 11 other category winners to claim the evening’s top prize.

The overall title made it a hat trick of awards for The Scarlet, adding to awards for Best Website and Best New Business in Cornwall earlier in the evening. Emma Stratton, director and co-owner of the Scarlett said: “We have had an amazing response to the hotel and have been exceptionally busy.

“We hope that this consequentially has a positive impact on Cornwall through everything from working with local suppliers to attracting more people to the region.

“Winning this award means a lot to the business as we are so passionate about Cornwall and contributing to the county’s economy.”

Now in their fifth year, the Cornwall Business Awards are organised by the Cornwall Development Company, in conjunction with Business Link and the South West of England Regional Development Agency, and aim to draw attention to Cornwall’s flourishing business scene.

Talent Karen Brady, vice-chairman of West Ham United Football Club and assistant to Lord Sugar on the BBC’S Apprentice show, was on hand to present the awards.

Cornwall Development Company chairman Martin Brooks said: “Once again, the Cornwall Business Awards have shown business leaders everywhere just what talent, imagination and immense strength in depth we have in this great county.

“All our winners – and particularly the Business of the Year – are Cornish success stories who act as standard bearers, showing the way forward for Cornwall, and indeed the UK.

“The Scarlett fulfils that remit admirably.”

The night’s other multiple winner was Padstow-based book manufacturer TJ International, claiming awards for Best Use of Technology and Business Improvement through People awards.

Across the water in Rock, there was also good news for Sharp’s Brewery; whose tenyear expansion from micro brewery to selling 20 million pints this year was rewarded with the Growth Strategy trophy.

Initiative There were two winners in St Austell, with Coodes Solicitors taking the award for Marketing Strategy in recognition of its fixed-price “Coodes Direct” initiative, while the St Austell Printing Company won the award for Customer Focus.

Nearby, Mike Quest of Roche-based Quest Environmental Solutions (QES) was named Cornwall’s Business Leader of the Year, and in Bodmin the expansion of Proper Cornish to open ownname cafe stores was declared the year’s Best Diversification.

In the Business Innovation category, Bude’s Zoeftig, overcame local competition from Bott Ltd, to win with its successful new “inFINITE” range of modular airport seating, currently being installed as far afield as Las Vegas and Mumbai.
